Internet sites for Screen Studies

  • The British Film Institute. Information about film and television with links to the BFI film library and related gateways.
  • The British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC).  A wide collection of resources including moving image databases, archived TV listings and newsreels.
  • The Internet Movie Database. The database aims to capture any and all information associated with movies from across the world, starting with the earliest cinema, going through to the very latest releases and even movies still in production. (University of California, Berkeley. )
  • Women in Cinema: A Reference Guide. Compiled by Philip F. McEldowney at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
  • Library of Congress Early Motion Pictures Web Site. A collection of films 'selected for their documentary value. They complement other historical materials digitized by American Memory and offer a particular counterpoint to the still photographic collections from the same time period.'
  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A wide range of information about the Academy and about the Academy Awards (Oscars).
  • North West Film Archive. The North West Film Archive, Britain's largest public collection outside London, is the professionally recognised home for moving images made in or about Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire.
  • The Internet Archive.  This American website was founded in 1996 to ensure permanent access for researchers and scholars to historical collections in digital formats.  It includes more than 30,000 moving images, which can be browsed by subject or keywords, ranging from vintage cartoons to public education films.

Screen Studies gateways

These sites provide access to collections of archives and artifacts in University and other collections. They are a useful way of tracking down previously hard-to-find primary material.

  • PORTAL is the British Academy's directory of online resources in the humanities and social sciences. It is designed as an entry point to available resources for those working in higher education and research .
