Welcome to the University of Manchester Library. This guide will give you an overview of the resources and services we offer to support your visit.
The University of Manchester Library offers reference facilities to north-west sixth form and mature students and their teachers to help with A-level, AVCE and Access course work.
Teachers can arrange for their post-16 students to visit The University of Manchester campus to support them with the Extended Project Qualification for their students.
To help manage the number of visit requests we receive, we have scheduled dates throughout the year where teachers can bring groups of students onto campus. These visits can include a research skills workshop, or a library visit or both. These visits are arranged by The University Widening Participation team.
To arrange a visit and book an EPQ session then please complete this online form.
The John Rylands Library on Deansgate also offers workshops for post-16 students. The neo-Gothic building is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture and contains one of the world's finest collections of rare books and manuscripts. If you are interested in a visit, why not book their Research using Primary Sources and Special Collections workshop; available as a morning or afternoon session. All workshops are free of charge.
Further information on the workshop and how to book can be found here: http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/rylands/education/post-16-workshops/
Students who wish to become members of the Library can fill out the membership form and pass it to their teacher, who should send the forms to the address on the back of the form with a covering letter stating the expected end date of the students’ studies. Cards cannot be issued unless the end date is supplied, as it is used for the expiry date.
Due to the numbers of students involved, we cannot process membership requests or issue Library cards on the day of a group visit. Library cards are not issued unless a student re-visits the Library on another occasion. Students will individually receive an email inviting them to visit the Library to have a photo taken and pick up their card.
Staff teaching the EPQ may also join More details can be found on our membership pages.
Details of when students can use the Library are shown on the right.
